On Macs and Windows

In general, Windows users seem to have been trained to blame their confusion on their own ignorance or inability to adapt. This self-doubt makes them less likely to demand that Windows developers deliver a more refined user experience. Mac users have been trained to blame their confusion on the poor interface design of the application. I think the superior usability of the Mac and Mac applications is largely a result of this cultural difference between the users of the two platforms. Accordance users are constantly pushing us to make the software better—to refine it in ways we may not have thought of and to adapt it to uses we may not have anticipated.

I just thought I would let you know that we’re trying to use Parallels software to install Windows XP on our MacBook. After almost two weeks . . . I’ve learned that the XP disc must be faulty. We’re waiting for the replacement to arrive, so until then . . . Anyway, I heard Steve Jobs (Apple, Inc. CEO) say that he thought every company should be the best it could be (or something like that). I really like the Wayne Gretsky quote that Steve Jobs used in his keynote address this year: I think it was something like, “I skate to where the puck will be, not to where it has been.”

Jason, let me know how Parallels works for you.

In watching the keynote address, you can see the attention to detail, user experience, and ease-of-use that is the primary reason I use a Mac. They’re always trying to improve and innovate.

    Resistance is futile.

The replacement XP disc came in. It installed on the first try with no hiccups. My wife can now do her travel agent bit using some “special” program that only runs on windows. I’m/we’re pleased with Parallels so far, but haven’t been able to take enough time to figure out how to put video onto the windows . . . it keeps jumping back to OS X (without shutting XP down) and trying to open with iPhoto. I’m confident we’ll figure it out eventually.

By the way, I hear Chris and Heather and tow are moving on up to the East side.
